Safeguarding Children Initiative offers a range of training options to equip people and organisations with the skills to keep children safe;

Our award-winning, peer-reviewed online child protection eLearning platform is a first and only for Aotearoa New Zealand.

It brings together the most up-to-date information nationally and globally combined with our vast experience on the front-line working with children, young people, families, and communities. Uniquely, it is built upon the experiences and reflections of people like you who are out there in the community. Your voices have been heard and are an integral part of our approach.

The course “Fundamentals of Child Protection” helps you understand your responsibilities in relation to child protection and will give you the essential knowledge and skills to become confident and competent. This course is available to ANYONE and EVERYONE – who comes in contact with children, young people, and families.

It is an essential part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and used for CME points for those in General Practice. The course is reasonably priced at $45 and takes 2-3 hours. You can log in and out, allowing you to complete the course at your convenience. It includes a wealth of information, including video clips to make it interesting.

For many years the eLearning was provided free of charge and used by thousands of people around New Zealand. This created a high demand and meant our digital platform was unable to cope with the deluge of traffic. Ensuring the information provided in the eLearning is up to date and researched takes a great deal of time and resourcing. To ensure that our eLearning continued to be user-friendly, of high quality and available long term the Board of SCI took the much-debated step in 2018 to offer the eLearning as a “pay-to-use” service that utilised a new digital platform, full redesign, content update and review.

Some organisations have opted to train all of their staff and volunteers via our eLearning course. If you would like to explore this option we can offer an attractive discounted rate for group registrations. We are also able to amalgamate our eLearning courses with your own eLearning platforms via a White Label version or SCORM file.  For both of these options please contact Willow Duffy:

Everyone who works with children should do this course. It’s excellent!

Tailored Support

Safeguarding Children Initiative offers tailored support to help your organisation audit and develop your child protection policy and procedures. Let us help you create an organisational culture of protecting children and implement a robust child protection policy. Our team draw on their extensive knowledge and expertise to create a bespoke solution which works for you, with children at the centre of all you do.

Child Protection Policies

We recommend any organisation that comes into contact with children has a child protection policy in place. If you receive direct or indirect government funding, this is a requirement under the Children Act 2014. A child protection policy, if it is do its job properly, needs to be a relevant, ‘living’ document that guides staff and volunteers effectively. Too often the creation of a policy is a ‘tick box exercise’, cut and pasted from other documents; perhaps it is not used or known by staff, or it is difficult to understand.

We can help you put together a child protection policy for your organisation, review your existing policy and also help you embed a culture of child protection in your organisation. Everyone should know about your policy and associated procedures – including the children in your care.
